Felida takes its name from an 1890 post office. According to Clark County's neighborhood history, the name comes from Felidae, the Latin word for the big cats, with the postmaster reportedly offering several options, including his cat's name. The Felida Odd Fellows Hall, built about 1902, is on the Clark County Heritage Register. Today Felida is a residential area northwest of central Vancouver. Vancouver Waterproofing LLC helps Felida homeowners with crawl space moisture, wet basements and foundation drainage.
A small historic community that kept growing
Felida has a long history as a community, but most of the housing around it was built much later, so a single street can include homes from very different decades. Foundation design, ground cover and drainage details changed over that time. A house with an older crawl space may have no ground cover at all, while a newer one may have a cover that has torn, shifted or never been sealed to the walls. We check what you have before suggesting a fix.
How water gets into Felida homes
Vancouver has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, and the soil around a house can stay saturated for months after the rains start. Moisture usually enters in one of four ways:
- Runoff from roofs and sloping ground that is not carried away from the foundation
- Groundwater pressing through walls, floors or the joint between them
- Humidity rising from bare or poorly covered soil in a crawl space
- Condensation on cold surfaces when warm, humid air gets into a crawl space, which can lead to mold and rot on framing over time
What a properly dry crawl space looks like
Building science sources agree on the basics: heavy polyethylene covering the crawl space floor, sealed to the walls and piers, installed whether the crawl space is vented or not. Where water collects, the floor should drain toward a sump or drain, so water does not pool beneath the liner. A liner alone does not help if water is also entering through the foundation wall.
